Command line

The binary is passback; you run it as npx passback. Use the commands below to set up your project, let your agent start the MCP server, and check your installed version.

passback init

Run npx passback init --apply in your project folder to set up Passback for your agent.

Option Value What it does
--root a folder Sets the project root. Default: your current folder.
--agents claude, codex, cursor or all Chooses the agents to set up. Separate several names with commas, for example claude, cursor. Default: the detected agents.
--app an app folder Chooses an app to set up. Repeat it for a project with several apps, for example --app apps/web --app apps/admin.
--apply none Writes the agent and app configuration. Without it, init only previews them.

Without --apply, init creates .passback/inbox and .passback/outbox, adds .passback/ to .gitignore, and prints the agent configuration and the app integration it proposes. It also updates the integration where Passback is already installed. It does not write the agent files, and your agent cannot use Passback yet.

By default, init sets up only the agents detected in your repository; if none are detected, it sets up Claude Code. Explicit agent names override detection, and comma-separated names select several agents. npx passback init --agents all --apply restores the previous behavior of setting up Claude Code, Codex and Cursor regardless of existing folders.

--apply writes the MCP configuration, a Passback block in AGENTS.md, the commands or skills for the selected agents only, and the supported app integration. For the Vite config changes and the agent files it writes, see Install with Vite.

The hosted options of init (--site) are described on the page about the dashboard setup.

passback dev

passback dev starts the MCP server your agent uses to read comments and report progress. Your agent starts it through the configuration npx passback init --apply writes; you never run it by hand.

Option Value What it does
--root a folder Sets the project root for the MCP server.

See MCP tools for the tools your agent can call.

Version

passback --version prints the installed version. Run it as npx passback --version.
